Calling all Peggy Mitchells!

To help celebrate 25 years of Eastenders an appeal for all Peggy Mitchells was made.  St Mark’s very own Peggy Mitchell, the only one in Aberdeen (all the others were christened Margaret) responded and had her photograph taken in front of the television having a fly cup with the actress Barbara Windsor playing Peggy Mitchell. The newspaper wanted to take Peggy to the Queen Vic in Rosemount but the snowy weather prevented this happening.

Peggy was a member of East and Belmont Church when in 1972 The South Church united with East and Belmont Church and the new congregation took the name, St Mark’s. When Peggy was able to go to church she was an enthusiastic member of the Guild of Friendship.

Anne Donaldson has fond memories of Peggy when she moved to Aberdeen in 1967 and met her when she was working at the University.  Alex McConochie remembers Peggy’s daughter Pat, who was a junior typist when he was a trainee surveyor and tea boy  working at the Assessor’s office at Aberdeen Corporation.

The Talking Centipede

A single guy decided that life would be more fun if he had a pet so he went to the pet store and told the owner he wanted an unusual pet.

After some discussion, he finally bought a talking centipede ( a 100 legged bug), which came in a little white box to use for his house.

He took the box back home, found a good spot for the box, and decided he would start off by taking his new pet to church with him.

He asked the centipede in the box “Would you like to go to church with me today?  We will have a good time”.

But there was no answer from his new pet.  This bothered him a bit, but he waited a few minutes and then asked again “How about going to church with me today and receive blessings?”

But again there was no answer from his new friend and pet so he waited a few minutes more thinking about the situation and the guy decided to invite his centipede one last time.

This time he put his face up against the centipede’s house and shouted “Hey, in there! Would you like to go to church with me and learn about God?”

This time a little voice came out of the box “I heard you the first time, I’m putting on my shoes!”

Breakthrough Generations
Breast Cancer Research

www.breakthroughgenerations.org.uk

Two years ago I was asked by my niece to take part in a research programme which is studying Breast Cancer. It involved submitting blood samples, which the nurse at Danestone Medical Practice did free of charge, and filling in a questionnaire. Recently I also completed a follow up questionnaire which 99% of those taking part also returned, and we will be asked to fill in more questionnaires over the next few years.

The aim was to recruit 100,000 women, a milestone which has been reached.  Women from all over the world are taking part.

Already it has become clear that regular exercise can reduce the risk of breast cancer and indeed can also reduce the risk of certain other cancers (the report is not specific).  Others factors are becoming obvious, (I will spare the men the details!) you can read about the survey on line. It is my hope that for a little effort my small contribution will help my family and other families children, and their children’s children.

The study is still recruiting and if you are interested in joining  either go online at www.breakthroughgenerations.org.uk or telephone  0870 242 4485 ~ it’s painless all it takes is bit of your time.
