The OAK Report for Summer 2008

Quite a number of O.A.K. staff and customers took part in The Walk of The Cross on Good Friday. Although it was wet, snowing and windy there was a good attendance with people swelling the crowd as we progressed from Church to Church. Unfortunately in Union Street the pilgrims became more and more spread out so it was not clear whether we were following the Cross or just shopping! Providing Marshals for the pilgrimage requires an insurance premium, and O.A.K. is hoping to sponsor the Marshals for next year’s march.

We have had two very successful Special Lunches for a project in Ghana and Aberdeen Action for Disability and look forward to another on 26th June 2008 in aid of Aberdeen Street Pastors. We would like to thank all our customers and staff who make these lunches such a success.

The Evening Service in Crown Terrace Methodist Church on 13th April with The Acclamations and The Scottish Bible Society was well attended and brought back memories of the Psalms and Hymns so many of us used to sing in Church. The Evening Services continue throughout the summer on the second Sunday of each month at 6.30pm and a warm welcome is always assured at Crown Terrace Methodist Church.

As we look forward to the summer holiday we hope to be able to keep the Café open for lunches every day and any extra help would be appreciated. If you can help us please speak to Daphne or Betty or just come in to see us at the Café.

The O.A.K. Report Easter 2008

Since the last magazine O.A.K. has held very successful Christmas Lunches thanks to the wonderful efforts of the staff in the kitchen and serving staff in the hall.  Our thanks to all our customers for all the support and encouragement we receive.  After the Christmas meals the CafĂ© was closed for a few weeks but we are now back serving our usual meals on a daily basis.

Our next special lunch will be held on Thursday 1st May with the proceeds going to Aberdeen Action on Disability, a local charity whose aim is to make life easier for those with physical and sensory disablilities.

Our evening services continue on the second Sunday of each Month in Crown Terrrace Methodist Church at 6.30pm.  The service on 13th April will take the form of a Songs of Praise all with a Scottish theme.  The Praise will be led by the Acclamations and the collection for the evening will go to the Scottish Bible Society.  We look forward to seeing many of our friends for Praise and Fellowship that evening.

We hope all our Customers and Staff have a Blessed Easter.

OAK Report for Winter 2007

O.A.K has had a busy end to the year with the Shoebox Appeal and Christmas Lunches.

Cornerstone Community Care presented OAK CafĂ© with an award in recognition of their contribution in providing volunteering opportunities for people with disabilities.  It has been a great pleasure and privilege to help those who have come to us as they have brought their own skills to the CafĂ©.

OAK will continue with Special Lunches next year and if anyone would like to suggest a Charity to be considered for some funding please speak to anyone at the Café.

We have been able to keep the CafĂ© open since the new kitchen was installed because some of our staff have covered many extra shifts, for which we are most grateful.  If we could find a few more volunteers it would spread the load especially at holiday periods.  If you would like to join us please speak to Daphne or Betty.

The Café will be closed after the Christmas Lunches until early January when we look forward to seeing you all again.

We wish all our Customers and Staff a Happy Christmas and New Year.

NB: Aberdeen Counselling and Information Service’s staff  members are most grateful for the generous donation received from OAK following a Special Lunch.

OAK Report for Autumn 2007

The O.A.K. Café has been able to remain open during the summer months due to the valiant efforts of our staff. We have been fortunate enough to gain a few new names to our staff rota and these helpers are very welcome. But for them and our regular staff doing extra duties we would have had to close for a period. If anyone would care to help us, even for a few hours occasionally, please speak to Daphne or Betty or come in to see us at the Café.

We took part in the Macmillan Cancer Support 'Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning' fund raising event by having a special Lunch the day before on Thursday 27th September in St Mark’s Hall. All the takings to go to the Macmillan Trust.

We know that some of our ladies have been busy with knitting needles for some time in preparation for the Shoe Box Appeal. The fact that some of the Eastern European Countries have joined the EEC has not relieved the hardship for the poorest members of their communities and reports from The New Hope Trust and DART tell us that our help will be needed for some time. Our Shoe Box Appeal will close at the end of October and any donations of suitable gifts should be handed in to the Church or Café so that we may pack them and have them delivered to New Hope Trust and DART for distribution.

Our annual Christmas Lunches will finish off our year. They will be held on 12th and 13th December and tickets costing ÂŁ10 each will be available soon.

The O.A.K Evening Services continue on the second Sunday of each month in Crown Terrace Methodist Church at 6.30pm and all are welcome to join us in fellowship. We look forward to seeing you all either at the services or in the café.

OAK Report for Spring 2007

O.A.K. had a very busy Christmas period and thanks are due to all our hard working staff and customers who made the Shoebox Appeal and Christmas Meals such as success.  Due to the refurbishment of the kitchen of St. Mark’s Church the cafĂ© has been closed since, but we are looking forward to reopening at the beginning of April and welcoming all our old friends and perhaps some new ones.

We have  had two very well attended church services.  The United Service for the end of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity held in St. Mark’s Church in January attended by the O.A.K. Churches and an Evening Service in Crown Terrace Methodist church to Celebrate the 300th Anniversary of the Birth of Charles Wesley.  This brought together members of the O.A.K. Churches with The Acclamations, The Scottish Bible Society and members of other churches in a glorious and uplifting, Songs of Praise.

O.A.K. is planning a Coffee Morning on Saturday 19th May from 10am to 1pm with the usual stalls and a light lunch from 11.30am and donations of home baking or goods for the stalls will be gratefully received.

We are also planning a Special lunch on Thursday 24th May at 11.30 and tickets will be available from the CafĂ© soon.

We look forward to seeing you all once the Café is reopened and wish you all the blessings of Easter.
