A Royal Encounter On Wednesday 19 April 2006 during a hill walk near Glenshee a few miles south of Braemar, three members of the rambling group, Elaine MacDonald, George Wright and Ian Lord, had a "Royal Encounter". We had a lovely walk up onto a hill and along the summit ridge before we descended to the Landrover track. Before heading back along the track to get to the car it was decided to have a short break. While we were enjoying a cuppa we saw a Landover in the distance drop someone off, who began to walk towards us. From a distance it looked like a gamekeeper but as he got closer it became obvious that it was Prince Charles. We remained seated but as he drew level we spoke to him and he spent the best part of ten minutes talking to us about his love for the outdoors, how he loves to get out for a walk and what he was going to be doing over the next few days, including visiting the Burn o' Vat Centre and the Gordon Highlanders' Museum before flying back to London to celebrate "Mamma's birthday". He asked how many different hills we had walked and what our favourite was. We told him that most of the hills in the area had been walked by us but that Lochnagar was our favourite. He said that was his favourite too and that he had painted it on numerous occasions. He said goodbye to us and continued on his way, leaving behind three very surprised and happy walkers, who still like to bore people with the tale of how they had a "Royal Encounter!" Spring 2005 After a long layoff during part of the winter, a short walk around Nigg and over the Loirston country park and back to the banks of the Dee was enjoyed by four walkers, three of whom enjoyed a winter walk over parts of Bennachie in the snow on 16 February. Planned walks for 2005 include: HILLS Cairnwell, Bennachie, Craigendarroch. RAMBLES Newburgh to Collieston, Hazlehead Park, Kemnay, Inverbervie, Dunnottar Castle, Loch Muick, Sculpture Trail, Tyrebagger. Dates have yet to be arranged. Please phone Ian Lord on 321882 for details or look for information in the weekly pew leaflet. Winter 2004 Due to various reasons we have not done many walks recently and at the time of writing, there are only a few walks planned for the start of 2005 with no dates arranged. For more information please call 321882 or look on the Church notice board in the vestibule. Autumn 2004 Our expedition to climb Ben Nevis on 21st August went well with all seven walkers getting to the top and safely down again. We were blessed with beautiful weather and fantastic views. "We" were Lewis and Anne Donaldson, Marjorie and Ian Lord, Elaine McDonald, George Wright, Elsa Black and Jean Black was looking after base camp!
And our previous reportWe had to postpone a few planned hillwalks because of quite bad weather earlier in the year but we are far from being ?fairweather walkers?! The ramble to DurrisForest had 3 walkers and we were a little wet before it finally stopped raining. Still, we had a nice walk! The walk from Aden country park to the observatory at Pitfour saw five members enjoying a lovely day?s walking with good weather throughout. Four walkers came to the walk on Saturday 1 May from Stonehaven to Dunnottar Castle and woods, returning to Stonehaven, Future walks include a number of hill expeditions to get fit for the Ben Nevis weekend (still a couple of places left) also Thursday 17 June to Seaton Park and a riverside walk on Wednesday 7 July from Newburgh to Collieston. See notice board in Church vestibule for more information or contact Ian Lord on 321882 or mobile 07929720846. Ian will be happy to help with any of your hillwalking or rambling queries. |
